Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls

Sun, 22 Jun 2025

A little late, but that State of Play huh? Overall, pretty cool, but that final trailer was a doozy. An ArcSys x Marvel tag fighter? Who saw that one coming? I’m not a big tag fighter guy, I’ve always felt too slow to keep up with the action, but it’s hard not to be swept up by a beautiful looking ArcSys game.

So here we go, a quick post covering who I want to make it in. I’ll assume that the minimum number of fighters for a four vs. four fighter will be twenty-four. Why? Well, it’s what I personally consider the smallest reasonable starting roster size for a tag fighter, and it’s the number ArcSys hit for Dragon Ball FighterZ, and I doubt this'll have less.

First up, let’s get these eight out of the way. Shown in the trailers and confirmed, we’re stuck with:

1. Captain America
2. Iron Man
3. Ms Marvel
4. Spider-Man
5. Star Lord
6. Ghost Rider
7. Doctor Doom
8. Storm

It’s nice to see Ms Marvel and Ghost Rider, but the rest aren’t too surprising. Kind of disappointed by Star Lord’s inclusion. I get that he’s big in the movies, but he’s just so boring looking. Even ArcSys couldn’t spice him up. You know what? Take Star Lord out, replace him with Gamora or Mantis. Literally anyone else from the Guardians will do.

Then let’s tackle the mutants. For myself and many others I imagine this is the big draw, and with Storm being shown it’s clear that the X-Men are back.

9. Wolverine

Literally the most popular mutant, and he’s getting a game from Insomniac. Think of the Brand Synergy!

10. Cyclops
11. Magneto
12. Juggernaut
13. Colossus

Of course we've got to include some of the classics. Cyclops is a no brainer, optic blast and all that. Magneto as the resident villain. Juggernaut and Colossus because I want as many giant brawler types as possible. Make 'em big, and give 'em command grabs.

14. Mystique
15. Jubilee
16. Quicksilver
17. Nightcrawler

The potential for a cool Mystique move set is high, especially if they avoid the easy out of making her a Mokujin/random select type! Make Nightcrawler a mixup nightmare, and Jubilee literally the flashiest character in the game. Finally Quicksilver, I would love to see an attempt at a speedster in a fighting game. Almost all speedsters, of which I can really only think of the Flash in Injustice, never actually feel fast. Can ArcSys succeed where others have failed?

18. Miles Morales
19. Doctor Octavius
20. Mysterio
21. Kingpin

The only other series I would put on the same level as the X-Men is Spider-Man. Peter’s already here, but Miles’ electric powers should differentiate easily enough. Doc Ock, just think of the eight armed shenanigans. Mysterio should be allowed to ham it up, I don’t know how an illusionist type character is meant to work in a fighter but he would look cool! Kingpin is in, but only if he’s absolutely giant. I want him Spider-verse style, standing up to Juggernaut.

22. Squirrel Girl
23. Nick Fury

Squirrel girl has been a favourite since I first read The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Perhaps a zoner? Imagine squirrels covering every inch of the screen. Nick Fury hasn’t been in a fighter as far as I’m aware. He’s meant to be this uber prepared and capable guy, so lets see it!

24. Galactus’ Hand

This is my odd pick. Let me play as Galactus, but obviously just the hand because it would be unfair to have a giant planet eater on screen. I know he can canonically change size but come on, just once will a game let me play as a giant hand? Smash has been teasing me for twenty-six years, someone has to deliver!
